Brendyn & Melissa

How it started

Our love story began in the vibrant halls of Brooklyn College, where Brendyn and Melissa were both immersed in the world of film studies.

The day I met Melissa was August 28, 2013, the first day of grad school at Brooklyn College. Years earlier, I’d stood there on the corner of Flatbush and Nostrand on that date several times before, wondering how many more times I’d find myself there. I was back in a place so familiar, telling myself that this time would be different. This time I wanted to be there.

As I took a seat in a classroom on the third floor of Whitehead Hall, where I’d also been before, it all looked the same. That’s when something different happened – I saw Melissa walk in and across the front of the room. She was one of the first people I noticed. She looked so good and walked with a confidence that would stand out on the first day of class. She was an MFA student, and I was in the MS program. Though we did not interact that day, I knew that I would make that happen.

We had our interactions across the desks in that class. At the end of the semester, most MFA students were going out for drinks off of Eastern Parkway. It was there that we had our first real series of conversations, laughing the whole time. I knew I’d done something right.

Melissa sent me a Facebook friend request that I received as I was parking near my apartment. I parked and accepted it immediately. I sat there and looked at her posts and pictures, of course because I was left so intrigued and wanted to know her better. I can still remember it so well. With that first semester over, I got more from standing on that corner on that day than I ever had before.”- Brendyn Smyth

Our Story

I knew Brendyn was endgame for me after our first date when he took me to an abandoned Catholic School. I still have it written in my diary:

Dear Melissa,

I’m writing this to your future self. You are 24 years old now and I want you to remember that you met your soulmate.

After eight wonderful years together, filled with travels around the world and the joy of raising our beloved cats, Chester and Ember—fondly known as “The Buttons” and our “Katzen Kinder”—Brendyn took me to Mystic, CT, our favorite anniversary destination.

I knew Brendyn was up to something when we checked into the hotel and I saw a bottle of champagne already in the fridge. I started to prepare myself, “COULD THIS BE IT?!” The sun was about to set. It was our anniversary and I absolutely had to make a social media post to tell the world for the 8th year, how much I love my love, naturally as one does. While I was distracted, Brendyn sneakily hid his phone camera in perfect position.

We had our champagne flutes in hand, he pulled me in close, I could tell he was nervous because he kept repeating himself, “We’ve gone on so many adventures together! We’ve gone on so many adventures together!” I leaned my head on his chest to hear how fast his heart was beating. Oh! It was beating fast alright! He dropped down on one knee, and it was magic.

I know together that our life will be magical. – Melissa Rodriguez

After eight wonderful years together, during which we traveled the world and raised our two beloved cats, Brendyn and I had our annual tradition of visiting Mystic, CT, our favorite anniversary spot. This year, our trip was even more meaningful as Brendyn was recovering from open-heart surgery. Despite the challenges he faced, Brendyn made our anniversary incredibly special. Surrounded by the place where so many of our cherished memories were made, Brendyn proposed, showing his love and strength. It was a moment that perfectly captured our journey together, filled with love, resilience, and the promise of a beautiful future.
